Interview with Tim Menzen on Lyphilized Drug Products and the Martian Pharmacy
Lyophilized biopharmaceutical drug products in space?
Based on a publication in the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Tim Menzen was interviewed by the editors of the Medicine Maker about the potential advantages of lyophilization for biopharmaceuticals in space. Lyophilization has already a long history for preservation of food in space: Since the first human space missions astronauts have been enjoying lyophilized food. Since then, preservation of food for space missions by lyophilization and other procedures is an active field of research.
The publication and the Medicine Maker article deal with the question of whether freeze-drying could also be a key technology for the transportation and storage of biopharmaceutical drug products in space.
